Consistency is overrated.
There’s nothing wrong with it.
In fact, it can be great when you’re trying to reach your goals.
If you find yourself able to take consistent action towards a goal - I love that.
Keep at it.
BUT you don’t actually need it to meet your goals.
What you need is persistence.
To decide that you aren’t going to quit even if you aren’t doing something consistently.
To decide that quitting isn’t an option.
That the goal is non-negotiable.
When perfectionists set a goal, they always have a plan.
And that plan usually involves being perfectly consistent.
And when they aren’t consistent…
When they are human…
They give up on the plan.
Or try to shame themselves back into consistency.
That’s a crappy way to try and reach a goal.
And a really ineffective one.
Your lack of consistency isn’t the real problem.
It isn’t why you give up on the goal.
It’s shaming yourself for a lack of consistency.
It’s your belief that you have to be perfectly consistent or the thing isn’t worth doing.
And in fact, persistence might create that consistency you’re looking for.
But even if persistence doesn’t lead to consistency, you are still moving forward.
And that’s how you achieve goals.
Not by being perfectly consistent.
