Time Management Techniques Aren’t Enough

All the time management techniques in the world — no matter how good you get at them — aren’t going to help you feel good about your time without an accompanying shift in some of your current beliefs.

1️⃣ You will never conquer time.

You can’t stop it. You can’t get more of it. There will never be enough of it to do all the things you want to do. You will miss out on things. You will always have to make hard choices about how you want to spend your time. Our time on this earth is finite, and we usually have no idea how finite. Time management can’t be about mastering time because you can’t.

When you use time management to try and feel in control of time, you may end up feeling less in control.

It has to be about making intentional decisions about how you want to spend your time, whatever amount of it you might have.

2️⃣ Your ability to manage your time has no bearing on your worth as a human being and has no moral value.

As a society, we’ve moralized productivity, efficiency, and busyness. We are taught that being more of those things is better, so the better you are at managing your time and becoming more of those things, the better you are as a human. It’s not true.

Your value as a human being is immutable.

3️⃣ Managing your time “better” or “well” (whatever those even mean) will not allow you to escape the experience of being human.

Even if you manage your time perfectly, you are still going to feel the full spectrum of human emotion. Anxiety. Overwhelm. Sadness. Fatigue. Anger. Resentment. Despair. You will always be a human with human emotions. Some things will be hard. Some things will not go the way you want. The unexpected will still happen.
