The Sunday Scaries

What if you believed with every fiber of your being that the Sunday Scaries were 100% inevitable?

That no matter how much you loved your job, it was just a fact of life that on some Sundays you have to feel some anxiety or dread about Monday.

How would that impact your experience of the Sunday Scaries?

Hear me out.

I’m not saying that the Sunday Scaries are 100% inevitable. They aren’t at all. You can absolutely get rid of them.

But part of what makes the Sunday Scaries so… well, scary… is the fact that you don’t think you should have them.

What if you didn’t think they were a problem?

The Sunday Scaries are nothing more than a combo of certain negative thoughts and the negative emotions that those thoughts are creating. They don’t actually mean anything has gone wrong.

But when you tell yourself that they shouldn’t be happening or that they are a problem or that they mean something bad about you or your life or your job, you then add extra unnecessary negative thoughts and emotions on top of the ones that you already have.

Which ends up making the Sunday Scaries scarier.

And from that place of added negative emotion, you aren’t able to really drill down on the underlying cause for the Sunday Scaries.

If instead, you thought of the Sunday Scaries like a headache, indigestion, or PMS or like a monthly bill you had to pay, or something else that is just part of being human, what would change for you?

This perspective shift has a few benefits:

It lessens the negative emotion surrounding the Sunday Scaries and the length of time that they last because you aren’t piling additional negative emotion on top.

It allows you to begin to focus on actually solving the underlying thing that are causing the Sunday Scaries.

So next time you get the Sunday Scaries - try acknowledging them (“Oh hi, I see you are here for your weekly visit.”) and asking yourself, with compassion, what you need in that moment.

What you need in that moment may be nothing but a little compassion for the fact that you are experiencing some anxiety or dread.
