If you chose your problems, what would you choose?
It’s been almost 7 months since I withdrew from the partnership at my BigLaw firm.
This is the concept that I kept coming back to when I was deciding whether to leave. And the one I still come back to 7 months later.
Problems are forever.
And I love this concept way more than diamonds.
Here’s why I LOVE it.
We create problems in our brain.
Nothing is a problem until you decide it is.
And your brain will always create problems for you.
That’s what human brains do.
The problems might be different depending on where you are in life, but they will always exist.
No matter where you are in life.
What you’ve achieved.
How much money you have.
How much free time you have.
What you look like.
We think problems are a bad thing because we hate the negative emotion that we feel when we believe something is a problem.
What if we just accepted that part of being human is having problems?
It’s all just part of the human experience.
And it’s part of what makes life interesting.
I left behind all of the problems that come with BigLaw, and I traded them for the problems that come with entrepreneurship. And I love it.
If you accept that your brain will always make something a problem, then you get to decide what “problem” you want to have.
Say, for example, you hate your job.
You get to choose.
Do you want the problems that come from staying in your current job and not making any changes?
Or do you want the problems that come with trying to make the job that you have better by making changes in that job?
Or do you want the problems that come from trying to find a completely new job or career?
All of those things come with problems.
And with respect to each of these scenarios, it’s your brain that is creating the problems.
Coaching can help with any of these things.
Learning how to manage your mind about your job exactly how it is.
Learning to accept the discomfort of creating boundaries, stopping people pleasing, and getting rid of perfectionism to change your current job.
Learning to accept the uncertainty that comes from starting a new career.
But nothing will ever get rid of all of your problems.
You will always have a human brain.
So the question isn’t: When will all of your problems go away?
They won’t.
The question is: Which problem do you want to have?
You get to choose.
And I think that’s pretty great.
If problems are forever… then the question really becomes why not? Why not dream bigger? Why not live bigger?
